I think you have to sell something unique to make money on ebay.
Pricing can be very competitive there so if you have something of a commodity the downward pressure on price will cut into any profits.
A niche product or something similar would be the way to go if you can.
That being said I have also made money there selling old cleaning equipment and things I come across in my travels.
